Zebco 888 Spincast Reel Review

The Zebco 888 Spincast Reel is a very popular, heavy-duty spincast fishing reel. The 888 is made of stainless steel, giving it a heavier, more rugged feel than other spincast reels. Use the included 25-lb test line, or add a heavier line. This reel is great for catching heavier fish, like catfish and bass.

Zebco 888 Reel

The Zebco 888 spincast fishing reel is made from a heavy-duty stainless steel. As a result the reel is heavier than many other reels. At 19oz, the 888 reel is more than twice as heavy as the 33 reel (8oz). The reel come with a tough stainless steel front cover, and the Power-T handle is large, made from stamped stainless steel. The drag on this reel is dial adjustable, with a maximum drag of 24lb.

Mechanics

The Zebco 888 features all-metal gears, with a gear ratio of 2.6:1. Keep your reel oiled to maximize its lifetime and ensure a smooth operation. This reel can work as either a left or a right handed reel. This reel has a 3 bearing drive (2 + clutch), and a continuous anti-reverse clutch.

Line

This reel comes pre-spooled with 25lb test fishing line. If you prefer, you can replace this line with heavier fishing line. This reel is better than other spincast reels for catching bigger fish because the reel has a heavier construction, which works better with heavier fishing line. This reel is compatible with braided fishing line.

Uses

The Zebco 888 is better suited for catching bigger fish than most other spincast fishing reels. It has all the ease of use that you’re used to in a spincast reel, but it is made with sturdier materials and a heavier construction. This lets the 888 hold up better over time and with heavier fishing line. It is particularly well suited for catching catfish and bass.

What else do you need?

Fishing Rod

While many reels are sold as combos (reel + rod), the 888 is not. The 888 is sold as a reel only, so you will need a fishing rod such as the Shakespeare Wild Cat Casting Rod, which is a very well liked fishing rod. If you are replacing a broken reel, and already have a favorite fishing rod, just use that one.

Fishing line

This reel comes pre-spooled with 25lb fishing line. Another option is to upgrade to a heavier fishing line, such as the Stren Catfish Mono fishing line. The Stren line come in a 425 yard spool, with a test weight of 30 pounds.
